Our Philosophy
From On Beyond Zebra by Dr. Seuss
“The A is for Ape. And the B is for Bear. The C is for Camel. The H is for Hare. The M is for Mouse, and the R is for Rat. I know all the twenty-six letters like that….through Z is for Zebra. I know them all well,” said Conrad Cornelius o’Donald o’Dell. Then he almost fell flat on his face on the floor, when I picked up the chalk and drew one letter more! A letter he never had dreamed of before! And I said “You can stop, if you want, with the Z because most people stop with the Z. (But not me!)"
Here at Beining Nursery & Landscaping, you’ll find all the quality plants from “A to Z” that you’d expect to find at any good nursery. But when you want to take your landscape or garden design beyond “Z” to create something very unique and special; we hope you’ll think of us first. You’re sure to love our incredible plant selection and Beining Nursery’s friendly, experienced staff.

How many of you as adults can still remember the names of plant specimens your mother had growing around your childhood home when you were eight? Tom does, even though his family moved from their Findlay, OH home when he was only in the third grade. He also remembers going out into the woods as a child and compiling leaf collections…for FUN! However, what started out as a rather odd hobby for a boy that young, eventually turned into his passion. And it was his passion for plants and nature that brought about the creation of “Tom Beining Landscaping” in 1985.
Many folks don’t realize that we have not always been “Beining Nursery and Landscaping,” in fact, the original “Tom Beining Landscaping” was strictly a landscape design, installation, and maintenance company. We first began growing some of our own plants in 1986 in order to supply the landscaping business. It wasn’t long before people who wanted to install their own landscapes began asking if our plants and materials were available for retail sale. We discovered that, while many people in this area enjoyed working on their own yards, there was a real need for a supplier of quality plants and materials that could also offer reliable, professional ideas and advice.
So, it was in 1988 under the new name, “Beining Nursery and Landscaping,” that we began stocking more plants for our customers, carrying larger volumes of mulch and peat moss, and promoting our retail nursery business as well as our landscaping services.
Our original 2.5 acre lot nearly doubled in size in 1997, when Tom and Cheryl purchased an additional 5.5 acres of land adjacent to the nursery. A year later, a new building was constructed to expand our potting/growing facilities, to run our landscaping operations, and to warehouse our new store items. With this new building available, we were able to renovate our old shop and have it ready as our new store in the spring of 1999. Since then, we have made numerous improvements including the addition of greenhouses, mulch bins, and a shade house, to name a few.
A major part of our success over the past 35 years can be attributed to our incredible staff. They are not only friendly and knowledgeable, but have had the benefit of working with owners that are some of the most experienced ‘plant geeks’ in the area. Yet, while we consider ourselves fortunate to have such great employees, we realize that our growth over the past 35 years could not have been achieved without you, our loyal customers. We feel proud and blessed to have had the privilege of serving this area for the last 35 years and are looking forward to many more years of “helping you get as much enjoyment from the outside of your home, as you get from the inside.”
